In 2030, the world of fashion will explore new forms of expression and creativity using conductive textiles (fabric that conducts energy) and wearable technology. We’re already seeing interest in clothing and accessories that use data from our bodies—like heart rate and brain wave activity—to translate as expressions of our emotions. For instance, in Japan you can buy a set of brainwave-controlled cat ears that perk up and droop according to how sad or happy your cat is.

 Clothing could be designed to capture energy generated through walking or running to power your mobile devices.

Fashion designers will enjoy working with a range of new materials. Beyond just looking good, technology has added a functionality factor to clothing. For example, a dress made with tiny batteries, conductive fabric and fine fibre optics could monitor your heartbeat or send alerts when your friends are nearby. Clothing could be designed to capture energy generated through walking or running to power your mobile devices. At the same time, fashion designers will use local materials in order to give their creations a sense of authenticity and originality.

 

Job Requirements / Skills

Studying fashion in school may look somewhat different than it does today. For the fashion designers of 2030, knowing how a circuit board works may be as essential as knowing how to sew and draw. But fashion designers will still need to be self-motivated, creative and savvy enough to uncover new styles and forms they can put into their designs.
